DuitNow is a family of payment services, not one universal account with one fee and one limit. A transfer to an identifier, a merchant QR payment and a wallet reload can have different conditions. This independent guide uses PayNet and provider documentation checked on 23 October 2026 and labels bank examples so their limits are not mistaken for nationwide rules.
Choose the correct payment service
PayNet distinguishes DuitNow Transfer, DuitNow QR, Request, Online Banking/Wallets and cross-border services. Identify which function your application is offering before comparing prices or limits. A QR code is an addressing method, while the bank or e-wallet supplies the customer account. For a transfer, the recipient may be resolved through an account number or registered DuitNow identifier. For a merchant payment, check the business shown on the confirmation screen. A familiar QR design does not establish that the person displaying it is an authorised seller.
Understand consumer QR fees
PayNet’s dedicated fee guidance states that DuitNow QR payments are free for consumers, while merchants may pay an MDR determined by their acquirer. A merchant acceptance fee is not the same as a charge levied on your wallet reload or a foreign-currency conversion. If another amount appears, identify what it represents and which provider charges it before approving. Do not mix these categories into a statement that all digital payments are free. Keep the receipt and quote if you need to ask the provider to explain an unexpected charge.
Use a bank example without universalising it
GXBank’s published FAQ, effective 22 March 2024, illustrates provider-specific limits: a default RM 5000 daily transfer limit and maximum RM 50000, while merchant QR payments have a default RM 1000 and maximum RM 5000. These are a dated bank example, not a limit promised to every Malaysian account. Check the current app and updated conditions before relying on them. The same document describes the transfer fee above RM 5000 as waived by GXBank. A waiver at one bank does not establish the tariff of another bank or wallet.
Verify identifiers and recipient names
A DuitNow identifier is linked through the participating institution. Confirm the recipient displayed after resolving it, especially when someone changes a telephone number or asks to use another account. An invoice received through a compromised email can contain a real account controlled by the wrong person. Confirm changed payment instructions through an independently known channel. A small test transfer may help identify an addressing mistake if the intended recipient confirms receipt, but it does not guarantee delivery or honesty in a new commercial relationship. Keep that distinction in mind.
Read the final amount and funding source
A wallet may require additional verification or have a balance limit below your bank’s transfer allowance. TNG Digital says outgoing transfers to a bank or another wallet require account verification. Therefore, a successful incoming payment does not establish that the same account can immediately send the money onward. Check the actual funding source and available transferable balance in the application. Do not raise limits merely because an unknown seller demands it. For a legitimate larger payment, obtain the provider’s supported procedure and confirm the recipient before changing settings.
Handle errors without creating another transaction
If the application hangs, inspect history before paying again. Save the reference, amount, time and resolved beneficiary. Ask the sending institution to investigate a pending payment or mistaken recipient. Do not assume an instant transfer can always be recalled. If you suspect fraud, BNM directs users to contact the bank’s scam hotline or NSRC 997 and lodge a police report. This page omits operating hours because official pages consulted differ; use your bank’s emergency channel promptly if a line cannot be reached.
Comparison and scope
| Action | Verified cost/limit information | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer DuitNow QR payment | PayNet says free to consumer | Merchant MDR is a separate acquirer matter. |
| GXBank transfer example | DefaultRM 5000/day; maximumRM 50000/day | Published FAQ effective 22 March 2024; recheck current app. |
| GXBank merchant QR example | DefaultRM 1000/day; maximumRM 5000/day | Separate payment limit, not a national rule. |
| Wallet transfer out | Provider verification and wallet limits | Do not substitute a bank ceiling for wallet eligibility. |
Practical checklist
- Identify Transfer, QR or wallet reload before comparing fees.
- Resolve the recipient and read the name before authorising.
- Check your provider’s current daily and per-transaction limits.
- Keep merchant MDR separate from consumer, reload and currency charges.
- Inspect transaction history after an interrupted screen.
- Report suspected fraud promptly through your bank’s official channel.
Frequently asked questions
Does every DuitNow application have the same limit?
No. Institutions, account types and security settings can impose different limits. The GXBank figures here are a clearly dated provider example.
Does a free QR payment make wallet funding free too?
No. PayNet’s consumer QR fee statement does not determine a separate card reload fee or currency conversion cost.
Can I recover a mistaken transfer automatically?
Do not assume so. Contact the sending institution with the transaction reference. A completed payment and a failed payment are different cases.
